Sarah F. Smith

Ms. Smith was born in Warren, IL. She graduated Wellesley College in 1918. In 1959, she received an award from the National Association of Public School Educators for her work in Stamford.
Sarah Smith won the Citizen of the Year Award for her role in catalyzing the movement for adult education. She was put in charge of teaching English to immigrants when she moved to Stamford in 1925 to help the effort. Those classes evolved into adult education which she directed beginning in from 1926-1960. By 1948 she had begun teaching adults in a course that prepared them to teach, “sex ed” to their children, in lessons entitled “Social Hygiene Guidance for Adults.”
