Gibbs Lyons

1953

Mr. Lyons began his career as a bank examiner at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta in 1917. He later became the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency, a national bank examiner and district chief national bank examiner in Atlanta and New York from 1919 to 1944. In 1944, he was chosen the first president of the First Stamford National Bank & Trust Company. He became its chairman in 1958. When the bank consolidated in 1962, he became chairman of the State National Bank of Connecticut. He later became chairman of the Connecticut Bank & Trust Co. He became the first president and an honorary member of the Midtown Club of Stamford, a member of the All Stamford Club and an honorary member of the Stamford Rotary Club. Mr. Gibbs was a World War * Naval Reserve veteran. He was the Stamford Commissioner of Finance under Mayor Thomas C. Mayers.

 

Gibbs Lyons was named Stamford Citizen of the Year for his volunteer work for the Stamford Boys Club, the Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center of Southwestern Connecticut, the United Fund and The Stamford Hospital.
