Thomas C. Mayers

He was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts and came to Stamford in 1953. He was an executive at Bloomingdales in Stamford before becoming mayor. He won the Governor’s Award in 1980 for his work in fighting drug abuse and was named Boss of the Year in 1974 by the Stamford Jaycees.
Thomas C. Mayers was a civic leader who won the Citizen of the Year Award for his community service, which included serving as mayor from 1963 to 1967 and working with the Citizen’s Action Council, the human Relations Committee and the Chamber of Commerce. He focus his terms on urban renewal and social issues and is considered responsible for the development and corporate boom downtown that took place during the 1970s. He was also active in the fight against drug abuse and the fight for low-income housing. He created a staggered rates plan that helped to end his term as mayor but gave low-income families a chance at finding housing.
