Rev Russell McGown

Rev. McGown was born in Amesbury, MA. He graduated from Bowdoin College and Yale Divinity School. He was awarded a Ph.D from Yale. He served pulpits in Shelton and Glastonbury prior becoming pastor of Stamford’s First Congregational Church. He led the effort to rebuild the Congregational Church of Glastonbury after hurricane of 1938 leveled the building. He continued to minister after his retirement from Stamford in 1965. He was the chaplain at Piedmont College in Georgia and later at the Barnstable Hospital in South Yarmouth, MA.

Rev. Russell McGown was awarded Stamford Citizen of the Year for his deep involvement in the Stamford community. He served on the boards of the YMCA and Rehabilitation Center. He was also president of the Council of Churches. He did religious harmony in Stamford by participating in a Brotherhood Week pulpit exchange with Rabbi David Pearlman of Temple Beth El.
