John O. Nicklis

Mr. Nicklis served a long career at Pitney-Bowes, Inc., one of Stamford’s largest manufacturing concerns. He was named vice president of finance in 1959 . He became chairman and chief executive in 1969. He retired in 1973. As a result of his decision to seek minority applicants, his life was threatened. He had to be protected by bodyguards.

John O. Nicklis gave preferential consideration of minorities for employment at Pitney-Bowes, Inc in 1963. At the time Mr. Nicklis was president of Pitney-Bowes, Inc. The company was responding to the civil rights movement’s drive for equal opportunity.
